Leaders PSV Eindhoven made it six wins in a row after a Hirving Lozano goal led them to a 1-0 victory over Excelsior.

PSV went into the game without captain Marco van Ginkel which meant Mauro Junior started in the midfield. The home side started sluggishly and were lucky not to be behind in the seventh minute when Mike van Duinen’s strike deflected onto the bar.

The first real chance for PSV resulted in a goal on 17th minutes as Luuk de Jong cleverly flicked the ball into the path of Hirving Lozano and the Mexican calmly slotted into the net.

De Jong and Steven Bergwijn then missed chances to double PSV’s lead before the break, while Excelsior should have been reduced to ten men but Jurgen Mattheij’s lunge on De Jong went unpunished.

In the second half, PSV failed to kill off Excelsior with Theo Zwarthoed saving from De Jong and Bergwijn. Late on Excelsior threatened an equaliser, but a nervous PSV held on for the narrow win.

PSV move ten points ahead of Ajax who play later on Wednesday, while Excelsior sit 11th.
