Feyenoord’s draw with Roda JC meant PSV had the chance of moving ten points ahead of the defending champions if they could defeat an in-form Vitesse, who went into the weekend sitting third.
The match was feisty from the start with both Marco van Ginkel and Fankaty Dabo going into the book early on for robust challenges. On 18 minutes, PSV made the breakthrough as Joshua Brenet played Hirving Lozano through on goal and the Mexican fired past Remko Pasveer.
PSV dominated after the opener but failed to kill the game off with Gaston Pereiro having an effort cleared off the line before Luuk de Jong failed to find the net on the rebound. Jurgen Locadia was denied by Pasveer and Daniel Schwaab headed a corner wide.
On the stroke of half time, Vitesse made PSV pay for their wasted chances as Locadia, unfortunately, deflected a corner into his own net to level the scores going into the break.
Locadia made up for his error early in the second half with a fierce strike from 25 metres which flew past a unsighted Pasveer to put PSV back in front. Vitesse thought they had equalised straight away but Tim Matavz’s goal was ruled out for offside.
On 56 minutes, Locadia curled a lovely strike past Pasveer to make it 3-1 and soon after Lozano sealed PSV’s victory with his second goal of the game and ninth in eight Eredivisie ties.
Mason Mount came off the bench to pull one back with an excellent strike, but it proved to be just a consolation for Vitesse. PSV remain five points ahead of Ajax at the top, while Vitesse drop to 4th.
