Lyon boss Bruno Genesio has defended Memphis Depay after the French press criticised the winger for his performance in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Memphis was whistled off by the Lyon fans on Tuesday before the club conceded a late equaliser in a 2-2 draw against a 10-man Hoffenheim. L’Equipe was brutal in their criticism of the Dutch international and gave him a rating of 3/10.

On Friday, Genesio was asked about Memphis performance and he responded, “I heard that Memphis was catastrophic, scandalous. That is not the case. His performance was good for the team. He showed a lot of commitment, his attitude was good too.”

The Lyon boss also thinks Memphis is being judged for his off-field comments recently, “His match has not been judged, we have judged his public appearances. It is a pity that we stigmatize a player. Last year he had a hard time at the beginning, but he had a very good end to the season.”
