The winger was the subject of three bids from an unnamed English side, believed to be Newcastle United on the final day of the transfer window, but Groningen rejected all three as they were unwilling to let Mahi leave.

Speaking to Groningen TV, Mahi said, “It was very specific.

“The club had three offers repulsed so that club wanted me very much. In the beginning, it was a little disappointing, but now I am very happy that the club did not let me go. It was a tidy sum, it was serious money.

“That also expresses confidence from Groningen that they will not just let me go. I’m grateful for that,”
