Groningen came from 2-0 down at the break to earn a 3-3 draw with Heerenveen in an entertaining clash at the Euroborg.

The visitors got off to a flying start with Morten Thorsby heading Denzel Dumfries cross past Sergio Padt after only five minutes. However, Heerenveen were then dealt a blow with goalkeeper Warner Hahn forced off with a shoulder injury.

New Groningen striker Lars Veldwijk passed up an excellent opportunity to level the score and just before the break Reza Ghoochannejhad converted another Dumfries cross to make it 2-0.

Groningen came out in the second half looking determined to get back into the game and Veldwijk made up for his earlier miss by pulling a goal back with a fine run and finish on 53 minutes. Just moments later, Groningen were left furious when Joost van Aken wasn’t punished for a pull on Mimoun Mahi in the box.

RefereeĀ Pol van Boekel did eventually point to the spot when Lucas Woudenberg brought down Jesper Drost and Mahi netted to make it 2-2.

Heerenveen quickly restored their lead through Thorsby after good work by Martin Odegaard and Henk Veerman. However, just before the end Van Aken pulled down Veldwijk and this time van Boekel pointed to the spot. Mahi once again converted the resulting penalty to earn Groningen a point.
