Donyell Malen scored a double and got an assist as Netherlands U21’s defeated a Mexico’s U22 side 5-1 on Friday evening.

Erwin van de Looi’s side are preparing for the start of the 2021 European Championship qualifiers later this year.. The coach picked two debutante’s in his starting eleven, goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen and new Barcelona signing Ludovit Reis.

Netherlands got off to a rapid start in Doetinchem with Donyell Malen playing the ball through for AZ Alkmaar winger Calvin Stengs, who chipped the ball over the Mexico goalkeeper to make it 1-0.

After ten minutes, Stengs set up Malen with an excellent cross and the PSV striker calmly fired Netherlands 2-0 up.

Ajax midfielder Dani de Wit made it 3-0 in the 42nd minute before Malen got his second before the break with a strike that just crossed the line after coming down off the bar.

The second half performance of Netherlands wasn’t as spectacular as the first and Mexico pulled one back when Alan Medina’s strike deflected off Perr Schuurs before leaving Scherpen with no chance.

However, moments before full-time, Netherlands made it 5-1 with substitute Cody Gakpo tapping in after being set-up by Kaj Sierhuis.

It was a positive performance for Netherlands and next up is a clash with Cyprus in September to begin the Euro qualifiers.
