mmm meThe 21-year-old was dropped from the Manchester United starting line-up after a loss of form, but returned against Watford on Saturday and looked close to being back to his best with a nicely taken goal topping off an energetic performance.

Memphis will now be looking to start the Champions League tie against former side PSV on Wednesday, but coach Louis van Gaal has refused to guarantee the winger a starting spot just because of one good performance.

Van Gaal told his press conference, “I am a trainer coach that always demands, not only one match but several matches but what I said is always the same procedure. I compare players and the ones I think best in our game plan, they shall play,”

Memphis excelled in a freer role through the middle against Watford and Van Gaal admitted this is the position that suits the youngster most.

He added, “I think how he played it was more or less the same system as I played with the Dutch national team,

“We played like that and then he has more freedom, it is like Arjen Robben, he has more freedom and these players are feeling so happy with their freedom and he can excel then. He showed that in the first half especially at Watford. In the second half, he was a bit less than in the first half but that is also logical when you are not playing because the match rhythm of the Premier League is very high.”
