According to the Sunday Mirror, Manchester City also failed to sign Ajax midfielder Frenkie de Jong in the summer.

The English newspaper is reporting that the Premier League champions had a £50 million bid for the 21-year-old rejected during the summer but are not ready to give up.

Ajax have insisted that De Jong is going nowhere in January, but Manchester City are set to return with a new bid in the new year in a bid to beat off competition from rivals Manchester United.

The English duo are not the only clubs to be linked with the Dutch international, though, as Barcelona, Tottenham Hotspur, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund are said to be big fans of the midfielder.
