Dutch footballing legend Marco van Basten spoke to the NOS in Enschede after the Netherlands women’s team won Euro 2017 beating Denmark 4-2 in the final.

Van Basten, who famously scored in the 1988 European Championships final to help the Dutch men lift their first ever major trophy, was a spectator in the stadium during the game on Sunday.
Afterwards, van Basten said ”I thought it was a great final that was very exciting. The Netherlands showed their character and team spirit in order to beat Denmark.
”I think they have played really well throughout the tournament and were the best footballing side that deserved to win Euro 2017.
”Lieke Martens is a great player who deserves her title as player of the tournament with her style of play and important goals.
”We are starting to wake up in regards to women’s football here in the Netherlands. The Netherlands is a footballing country and it’s important to get youngsters playing and enjoying football.
”We have to make sure that our own women’s league is of top quality as most of our current players play abroad . Then we can make even more progress.
”When you win a major tournament it brings massive joy that are eventually the highlights of your career ”.
