The Heerenveen board are said to be reluctant to let Van Basten leave the club but they respect his decision.
Talks between the former AC Milan and Ajax striker and the club had been ongoing for the last few weeks but the 49-year-old has decided to leave as he does no longer have that good feeling that he used to have at Abe Lenstra Stadium. This may well be related to the unrest that has been growing in the director’s box over the last couple of months.
Marco van Basten came to Heerenveen in the summer of 2012 to succeed Ron Jans on a two-year deal which is due to run out in July. Last season he led the Frisian side to an eight place in the Eredivisie. So far this term, Heerenveen are even better off sitting in fifth.
Heerenveen will now be looking for a new manager and there is already a lot of speculation. A possible candidate could be former boss Gertjan Verbeek (now with Bundesliga strugglers Nürnberg), although the likes of Erwin Koeman, Alex Pastoor (both unemployed), Mario Been (former Heerenveen player, now with KRC Genk) may also be on the Heerenveen radar.
