van basten bThe Dutchman at the end of last month announced that he will be leaving the Frisian club at the end of the season. The 49 year old claimed the reason for his departure is that he no longer has that ‘good feeling’ he used to get when walking into the Abe Lenstra Stadium. The board at the club were disappointed to let van Basten go, but they later said on the club’s website that they ‘ respect his decision’

Dutch newspaper AD have spoken to van Basten after his announcement that he will leave club and he said in the interview that ‘ I do not want to leave (the Netherlands) now’ and then later added the reason for this, ‘and this is to do with my family situation’.

Originally when it was announced van Basten was leaving the Frisian side, many thought that he would make an awaited reunion with AC Milan working alongside newly appointed Clarence Seedorf or that he might go and try and find some work in the Premier league.

But now it seems he will continue to stay in the Eredivisie and there are many possible clubs he could join; Feyenoord are looking for a replacement but his link with Ajax may perish that idea, also Ajax may be loosing Frank de Boer in the summer with clubs such as Barcelona believed to be interested and also by now and the end of the season other vacancies will become available for the Dutchman.

Before Van Basten took over at sc Heerenveen he was always seen as a someone that should have just finished his career when his playing days ended and that he was not suited to management due to unsuccessful spells at Ajax and the national team.

However since taking over at Heerenveen van Basten has proved he is a worthy manager capable of success. In his short but thoroughly enjoyable time at at Heerenveen he has managed to take the club to eighth in the league and got them in the Europa league play-offs where they were narrowly beaten by FC Utrecht, and this season, has been even better as his side sit in fifth place.
