It comes after the midweek Champions League defeat by Romanian club FC Vlitorul Contanta. Mario Been only signed a one year deal with Apoel Nicosia in May 2017.

Been spoke about his sacking to RTV Rijnmond, saying, ”I believe I am the 14th manager of APOEL Nicosia to be sacked by the club within the last 4 years. I have never experienced anything like this but that’s the way it goes.

”The President of the club said that the fans were not happy and that he felt a statement had to be made ”.

Been was also previously manager of Excelsior Rotterdam,  NEC Nijmegen, Feyenoord and Belgian side Genk .
