The 17-year-old netted a fine goal in the victory and afterwards stated his belief that Ajax can still catch Feyenoord and win the title.

De Ligt said ”We did not start well today. We presented Heerenveen with a lot of chances and we could not manage to get a hold of them hence why we went 1-0 down. But I do believe that we deserved to win the game.

”It’s difficult to explain after the euphoria of our win against FC Schalke 04 during the week and then our sluggish start today but these things happen in football. The most important thing when such a thing happens is that you show character and manage to turn it around which we managed to do today.

”I felt that the game was won after the 4-1 and the penalty from Kasper Dolberg. I am also happy with my goal too. It was great insight from Kasper to set me up.

”We believe that we can catch Feyenoord. We are entering the last few games of the season where the pressure will show. It will be interesting to see how Feyenoord deal with it. We have to win all of our remaining games and hope that they drop points.”

De Ligt also elaborated on his national team debut against Bulgaria, ”My experience with Oranje I have managed to use as a motivation to improve even more as a player and to show that I can perform at that level.”
