The 17-year-old centre-back became the youngest player to ever appear in a European final on Wednesday and hardly put a foot wrong despite the defeat.
After the match, De Ligt said ”I am really disappointed. We knew that it was going to be a difficult game and we did not create enough chances.
”The two Manchester United goals came from nowhere and as a team we are disappointed we did not win the cup. We played under our level tonight and not in the way we showed we can against Lyon and Schalke.
”In previous game’s we have taken the lead and with our supporters behind us that gave us an extra boost. Tonight Manchester United scored first and it was always going to be difficult. Our fans were fantastic tonight and gave us great support.
”In a few weeks we will realise what we have achieved making so many of our fans happy and putting Ajax back on the map in Europe. We can be proud of our European campaign this season. Our manager told us after the game not to forget what we have done as a team and as players and that we must continue in this vein.
”Our careers are only just beginning. We must keep our head up and keep developing in order to be able to play these types of games again in the future.”
