Steijn was heavily linked with Ipswich Town at the end of last season, but has decided to extend his contract with VVV Venlo and will lead the club back into the Eredivisie.

Steijn said, ”The contract extension gives more confidence. I spoke to the board over the previous months and I still had one more year left on my contract. Before we even became champions the club asked me if I wanted to extend my stay here.

”I am happy to work here at VVV Venlo and that has always been the case during the three years that I have been here. We have a great staff and a good team behind the scenes too,

On preparations for the new season and transfers, he added, ”I am delighted that the squad that won the Jupiler league has stayed together. I believe we have many players in our squad that can play in the Eredivisie but they still must show that.

”We are talking to agents and players and we hope to add some more players before the start of the season. We have the lowest budget in the Eredivisie so we must be creative.

”We showed our creativity last season that with the 10th biggest budget we managed to become champions of the Jupiler League.

”I am convinced that at the start of the season we will have a team ready to compete. We have been successful the last three years and we want to continue in that vein.”
