Memphis Depay and Frenkie de Jong both scored as Barcelona defeated Villarreal 3-1 to give new head coach Xavi his second victory as head coach.

Barcelona started the clash well and they created a number of chances without netting. Gavi hit the post while Memphis put a huge chance wide after an excellent through ball by De Jong.

Arnaut Danjuma was the most dangerous player for Villarreal but he could not find the net with two chances and the first half ended goalless.

Three minutes into the second half, De Jong found the net for Barcelona from close range and the goal was eventually given after a VAR review.

On an assist from Danjuma, Samuel Chukwueze equalised for Villarreal with fifteen minutes left and it seemed the game was heading for a 1-1 draw. However, Memphis latched onto a long ball in the 88th minute before showing great composure to round the Villarreal goalkeeper and slot the ball into the net.

Philippe Coutinho then made it 3-1 with a late penalty as Barcelona took the victory that has them seventh. All three Dutch internationals, that started, played the full ninety minutes, while Luuk de Jong remained on the bench.
