Memphis Depay made the difference as Lyon defeated Angers 2-1 on Saturday.

The winger, who has been in excellent form for club and country recently, was left on the bench for the trip to Angers and watched as Lyon struggled to take control.

In the 34th minute, the hosts were reduced to ten men when Ismaël Traoré saw a straight red but even with a man advantage, Lyon couldn’t find a way through.

Ten minutes into the second half, Memphis was introduced from the bench and shortly afterwards he made an impact, crossing for Houssem Aouar to make it 1-0. Memphis then set up Moussa Dembélé to net but his goal was disallowed by VAR.

With five minutes to go, Memphis sealed his side’s victory with a simple finish into an empty net. Cristian López headed one back for Angers but it was nothing but a consolation. Lyon now rises up to third spot.
