Memphis Depay spoke to NOS about his failed move to Barcelona after Netherlands 1-0 defeat to Mexico.

Memphis Depay was heavily linked with a move to join Ronald Koeman at Barcelona, but the deal did not go through. According to reports in Spain, La Liga blocked the deal because of Barcelona’s high wage bill.

Speaking to NOS, Memphis was asked how close he was to joining Barcelona, “Pretty close, yes. We don’t need to go into all the details, but there were certain rules that prevented it unfortunately. But I believe that everything happens for a reason.”

Memphis is not ruling out a move to Barcelona in the future, “I now focus on Olympique Lyon and want to be important there again. Then we’ll see how things are going again afterwards. If I do my thing, the interest may still be there. I just have to flip the switch now.”

On the defeat to Mexico, Memphis was disappointed to miss a late chance to make it 1-1, “You just have to take that chance, then you won’t lose here. Personally, it could also be better today, because I have to be more decisive.”
