Ronald Koeman set his sights on signing Memphis Depay to replace Luis Suarez, and personal terms had already been agreed with the forward.
However, Barcelona needed to sell Ousmane Dembele on transfer deadline day to make the transfer possible. That did not happen with the winger refusing to join Manchester United.
That meant Barcelona could not fund the move for Memphis, who will now remain in France until at least January. His contract with Lyon expires next summer.
