The winger impressed in a cameo last week as Lyon easily defeated Marseille and on Saturday he was handed his first start for the club as they hosted Lille.

The game began promisingly for Memphis, who impressed with some nice runs and combinations with Alexandre Lacazette. However, on 38 minutes the Dutchman lost possession in the centre circle which led to a counter attack and Yassine Benzia’s deflected effort found the net to give Lille a lead.

Five minutes into the second half Memphis almost equalised with a shot from a difficult angle before his teammate Mathieu Valbuena spurned an open goal by blazing over. Memphis was then substituted on 70 minutes to an applause from the home crowd but his side could not muster a comeback and two goals before the end saw the game finish 2-1 to Lille.

Memphis will now be hoping for a better showing in midweek when Lyon face Marseille in a cup tie.
