Netherlands struggled to create chances in De Kuip on Thursday and fell behind to a shock goal with fifteen minutes to go. However, Memphis Depay equalised before Luuk de Jong made it 2-1. Memphis then got a second with a calm finish in injury time to seal a 3-1 win which puts Netherlands top of the group.
Memphis has now scored six goals and added six assists in five Euro 2020 qualifiers.
After the game, the attacker spoke to NOS, “For the fact that we have turned it over, the credits can go to the team, which has always believed in it.”
Analysing the game, Memphis said, “I didn’t feel really lonely up front, but I didn’t have a good feeling either. It was not easy to play football, we were difficult in the game. This was partly due to Northern Ireland. They did very well, with their qualities they got the maximum out of it, they didn’t want to make a competition of it. We knew that beforehand. Then you know that you have to start creating, but that lasted and that lasted … We had little finesse in the final phase.
“We suddenly got the hit on the nose. Then there was some frustration with me, I was furious. But then we show that team spirit again. I have said it before: we would rather make the 1-0 and expand it, but that is how it works.”
Memphis was then told his great stats for the national team in 2019 and responded, “I’m happy with that.
“I always want to do better, because I know I can do better. But maybe I should also be aware that this is just very good. I would like to keep to this.
‘This is also largely due to the team. They look for me and give me confidence, so I try to prove myself for them. “
