Lyon boss Rudi Garcia has named Memphis Depay as the club’s permanent new captain.

The Dutch international has worn the captains armband at times during the last few Lyon matches, but Garcia still wanted to consider other candidates.

At his press conference on Thursday, the Lyon boss confirmed that Memphis will now remain as the club’s captain.

He said, “Memphis will remain the leader. The others that were discussed were also candidates for me, but Memphis stands out in terms of motivation and sporting abilities. He also started French lessons to master the language.”

Garcia also hit out at the Netherlands coaching staff for using Memphis against Estonia, “He was injured.

“He played in a competition for which he did not have to be selected. That shows a lack of respect towards Olympique Lyon. For us it is very unfortunate. Whether I am annoyed by this? Yes, how could I not be? ”
