Expectations surrounding the winger have been high since he broke into the PSV Eindhoven line-up, but he couldn’t live up to his potential at Manchester United.

Now at Lyon, Memphis is rediscovering his form, netting ten goals and providing six assists. However, the 24-year-old is still criticised for being too hit and miss.

Speaking to Canal+, Memphis admitted that consistency is what is stopping him from being one of the best players in the world.

He said, “Of course, I want to be the best in the world. I want to play against big teams and against big stars. It is not too late for that. Cristiano Ronaldo was also 24 years old when he became very important and decisive in every game.

“What am I missing to be the best? Honestly, nothing in terms of quality, just consistency, and that’s not arrogance.

“I take risks and sometimes it’s not the best choice. I have to take that kind of risk to become one of the best players in the world. If that’s what I want to be, I cannot just play simple.”

Memphis recognises that he cannot be the worlds best by staying with Lyon, “‘Will I be the best player in the world at Lyon? No. That is a simple answer. Alexandre Lacazette was the best in Lyon, but he had to go to Arsenal to get even better. “
