Ajax have put themselves in a good position to reach the Europa league group stages after a 1-0 win over Jablonec at the Amsterdam Arena in their play-off first leg.

aja jablDuring his pre-game press conference Frank de Boer stated that Ajax had to give up the idea of dazzling football in order to win matches, saying “Sometimes it must be ugly.”

Ugly is what those viewing the first half at the Amsterdam Arena saw, with Ajax unable to create any clear cut chances against a defensive Jablonec side despite completely dominating possession.

In the second half it took a helping hand from Jablonec to secure victory for Ajax as Davy Klaassen was inexplicably taken out in the box by Vit Benes, and Arkaduisz Milik fired the home side in front from the spot.

Klaassen could have made the result even better for Ajax in injury time but his free header with the goal gaping flew over the bar. Ajax now head to the Czech Republic with a slim lead, but more importantly no away goals conceded.
