Van der Gaag stated that Excelsior must remain positive and focused until the end of the season in their battle to avoid relegation. The win on Friday lifted them out of the relegation zone.

He said, ”We are aware how quickly things can change during the season and we continue to work hard. There are still a few games to go. We must remain focused.

”It’s nice to celebrate an important win after the game with the squad and a deserved victory too. I must also compliment the supporters. Around 600 supporters in the away section. The say that Excelsior is a small club but you see tonight how big the club is and what it means to the supporters.

”Tonight’s game was really important and if we would have lost it would have meant that relegation would have moved a step closer perhaps. We are not out of it by any means but we have dragged in other teams around us on 28 points into the relegation picture.

”We must remain positive and we have had good results of late but so have competitors too. Roda JC won yesterday against PEC Zwolle. A victory tonight can only give us a boost.

”We are taking it game by game and we know that we can pick up points in every game we play. But we must remain sharp and look ahead to Vitesse next week.

”We must enjoy our victory in the Rotterdam derby tonight. We needed it and we deserved it too ”.
