A double from Peniel Mlapa saw VVV Venlo defeat Willem II 2-1 and move up to sixth.

Mlapa had already gone close to the opener before the striker nodded VVV in front just before the break.

Willem II were awarded a penalty in the 60th minute when Jerold Promes brought down Vangelis Pavlidis. Daniel Crowley netted from the spot to equalise and score Willem II’s 2000th Eredivisie goal.

The landmark was not enough to inspire Willem II to a victory despite the visitors creating chances. In the 77th minute, VVV snatched the victory as Mlapa slid in Peter van Ooijen’s cross.

The win lifts VVV back up to sixth spot while Willem II are 9th.
