With Vitesse losing on Saturday, Ajax had the chance to move nine points clear at the top of the table, but they were dealt an early blow when captain Siem de Jong was forced off in the opening five minutes through injury.
It was his replacement, Kolbeinn Sigthorsson, who came closest to scoring for the leaders in the first half, but his effort was cleared off the line.
NAC Breda threatened on the counter throughout the first half, and Jasper Cillessen had to pull off a good double save to deny right back Sepp de Roover.
The second half was a disappointing affair with neither side really threatening to break the deadlock, and in the end they both settled for a point.
Ajax are now seven points clear at the top with six games to go, while NAC Breda lie 11th.
