NAC’s last home game saw them lose 8-0 to Ajax and with their relegation rivals Twente, Roda JC and Willem II picking up points, they needed a victory to keep them out the drop zone.
The home side started brightly and on 24 minutes Giovanni Korte was brought down in the box for a penalty, which Ambrose calmly netted to make it 1-0.
Three minutes into the second half, referee Kevin Blom again pointed to the spot after Ambrose was brought down and the French striker netted his second penalty to put NAC further in front.
Mike van Duinen’s placed shot brought Excelsior back into the game just after the hour mark, but Paolo Fernandes settled the victory for NAC with a shot that sneaked past Ogmundur Kristinsson.
The win keeps NAC in 15th spot while Excelsior stay in 10th.
