Utrecht didn’t need to get out of second gear to easily defeat NEC Nijmegen 3-0 and consolidate their position in fourth place.

The home side went into the game with only one win in their last seven matches and their lack of confidence was evident from the start as they struggled to create anything.

Utrecht eventually took the lead on the half-hour mark as Zakaria Labyad picked up the ball just outside the box and sent a deflected shot into the bottom corner. Before the break, the visitors doubled their lead when a fantastic counter ended with Yassin Ayoub slotting past Joris Delle.

Peter Hyballa clearly had harsh words for his side at the break as they started the second half strongly, but they couldn’t find a way through the Utrecht defence. Eventually, Utrecht sealed their win through Sebastien Haller, who latched onto Amrabat’s pass before slotting past Delle.

The win keeps Utrecht in fourth and three points ahead of FC Twente, while NEC are 13th.
