It was the visitors who started brightly, and they were deservedly ahead after 10 minutes when Kelvin Leerdam rose to head home a corner.
Just after the half hour mark NEC were level when a free kick wasn’t cleared, and after Theo Janssen cleared the ball of the line, Christoph Hemlein was on hand to stab in from close range.
However the teams weren’t level for long when on 39 minutes Vitess were awarded a penalty after Pavel Cmovs bundled over Mike Havenaar. Captain Theo Janssen made no mistake from the spot to make it 2-1 just before half time.
Five minutes before the end substitute Michael Higdon seemed to rescue a point for NEC with a smart turn, and finish from close range to send the home fans delirious.
However with the last kick of the game, Vitesse stole the three points, when Lucas Piazon finished excellently into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.
The win sees Vitesse climb to fourth, and only one point behind leaders Twente, with a game in hand, while NEC remain rooted to the bottom, and still searching for their first win of the season.
