NEC Nijmegen’s run of seven consecutive draws ended on Sunday as they lost 2-0 against Sparta Rotterdam.

The hosts found the lead after only seven minutes as Dirk Abels was given too much room from a corner to net. Jasper Cillessen was furious that the corner was given in the first place but his anger fell on deaf ears.

Ten minutes later, Jonathan de Guzman netted the second with a low strike that beat Cillessen, who may have done better. The Netherlands international prevented a third goal before the break with a fine save to deny Joshua Kitolano.

The lead was never threatened in the second half and Sparta remained comfortable as they recorded the three points.

Sparta Rotterdam is now sixth in the table, while NEC is 11th.
