oranje 1The home side took the lead after 11 minutes, when good link up play with Jeremain Lens saw Robin van Persie set up Rafael van der Vaart to fire into the corner from the edge of the box.

The rest of the first half was a scrappy affair, with Romania coming the closest to another goal when Popa fired inches wide, afterwards a replay showed Kenneth Vermeer got the slightest touch.

On 55 minutes the Dutch got a second, after great work from Arjen Robben saw Robin Van Persie brilliantly head into the net via the post for his 33rd international goal equaling Johan Cruyff’s number.

He then netted number 34 from the penalty spot, after Jeremain Lens was fouled, and the rout was completed in the last minute, when Adam Maher’s shot was parried to Lens, who had a simple tap in.

With Turkey drawing 1-1 with Hungary earlier, the Netherlands are now seven points clear, and all but on the plane to Brazil with four matches left.
