Netherlands Women have qualified for the World Cup semi-finals for the first time after a 2-0 victory over Italy on Saturday.

Played in sizzling heat in Valenciennes, Netherlands lined up with Lieke Martens in the starting eleven despite the Barcelona star being an injury doubt.

Netherlands were sloppy in the first-half and the best chances fell to the Italians. Valentina Bergamaschi poor effort was caught by Sari van Veenendaal, while Valentina Giacinti just failed to connect with the ball from close range.

Netherlands improved after the break with Sherida Spitse going close with a free-kick and Daniëlle van de Donk hitting the crossbar.

In the 70th minute, Netherlands got the breakthrough with Vivienne Miedema heading in a Spitse free-kick. Ten minutes later, Stefanie van der Gragt sealed the victory with another header.

Netherlands will now face either Germany or Sweden in the final four and can start dreaming of their first World Cup final.
