Netherlands missed out on a place in the final because of a heart-breaking loss on penalties to Mexico last week.
Mohamed Taabouni opened the scoring for Netherlands in the 15th minute after an excellent pass by Kenneth Taylor. However, after a swift counter, Arnaud Kalimuendo-Muinga equalised for France seven minutes later.
The game was even from that point but ten minutes into the second half, France took the lead and it was Kalimuendo-Muinga who scored again.
Sontje Hansen missed a good chance to make it 2-2 and Kalimuendo-Muinga then sealed his hattrick to make it 3-1 for the French.
Netherlands looked for a way back into the game but they couldn’t take one of their chances.
France takes the bronze medal while Netherlands heads home from Brazil empty handed. However, Peter van der Veen’s side can look back on a positive tournament, especially after they lost their opening two games.
