Netherlands got their first ever Womens World Cup off to a perfect start with a 1-0 win over New Zealand.

ora womThe match got underway in the Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton at 2am UK time with all eyes on Dutch superstar Vivianne Miedema who returned from injury for the game, and was tipped to set the tournament alight up front.

However it was Miedema’s attacking partners who stole the show in the first half with Danielle van de Donk seeing a goal disallowed, before Lieke Martens opened the scoring in the 33rd minute with a fabulous strike from the edge of the box which flew into the corner.

New Zealand pushed for an equaliser, but Loes Geurts was unbeatable in the Oranje goal and Netherlands held on to claim their first World Cup win.

Next Friday Netherlands will come up against China, who were defeated by hosts Canada earlier in the day.
