Netherlands U19 side are out of the European U19 Championships after a 3-1 defeat to Spain.

Wim van Zwam’s side went into the match needing to beat Spain by more than one goal, or win, and hope that Lithuania could pull off a shock result against Portugal.

Netherlands bossed the first half, and finally took the lead after 36 minutes when Yannis Ayoub bravely saw his header saved by Spain’s goalkeeper, but Clint Leemens was there to tap into the net.

The young Dutch side had great chances to extend their lead, with Anass Achahbar unable to find the net, with the goalkeeper stranded, while Ayoub headed wide.

They were made to pay for these misses, as Spain equalised through a Ramirez header, before they took the lead with 10 minutes to go as Vadillo netted from long range.

Three minutes later, Vico added insult to injury for the tiring Dutch, and although Anass Achahbar netted a late penalty, it was too late for the Dutch side.

The win flattered Spain, but the young Dutch side learnt what happens when you do not take your chances when on top.

With Portugal seeing off Lithuania 4-2, the Netherlands bowed out of the competition, with only one win to their name, as Spain, and Portugal progress to the semi-finals.
