Jasper Cillessen 6/10: Could do nothing with the goal and made a good save against Insigne in the second half. Otherwise had a quiet night.

Hans Hateboer 4.5/10: Very poor performance and was dominated by the Italy attack before being substituted for Dumfries, who looked better in the 15 minutes he was on the pitch.

Nathan Ake 5/10: Couldn’t contribute going forward and was surprised for the goal. Didn’t look comfortable at left-back again.

Joel Veltman 4.5/10: Looked out of his depth against a better attack and struggled throughout the game. Lost possession again and again. Netherlands really missed De Ligt and De Vrij.

Virgil van Dijk 6/10: The leader at the back again, but had a lot to do with those around him not up to standard.

Marten de Roon 5/10: Again contributed very little except for a few tackles in the middle. Lost Insigne who set up the goal and offered nothing going forward. Second game that De Roon has struggled to make an impact.

Frenkie de Jong 6/10: Not his finest evening in a Netherlands shirt but not a bad game from the midfielder, who was always looking for possession but struggled to make an impact with the ball at his feet.

Donny van de Beek 5.5/10: Put in a lot of effort in closing down the Italy defence but couldn’t get into the game when Netherlands had possession. Improved early in the second half, and went close but was then substituted.

Georginio Wijnaldum 5/10: Not his fault as Lodeweges decided to start him on the right wing which was a really poor decision. Wijnaldum improved when moved centrally in the second half but by that point, Netherlands were chasing the game.

Quincy Promes 6/10: Looked dangerous at times but always found an Italian defender in the way when he had an effort at goal. Can get into good positions but had no end product.

Memphis Depay 5.5/10: Again a lot of effort from the Netherlands star forward but he had an off night in front of goal. Then he picked up a stupid yellow card which rules him out of the next game.

Substitutes

Steven Bergwijn 5.5/10: Came on for Van de Beek on the hour mark but struggled to make an impact against a strong Italian defence.

Denzel Dumfries 6/10: Looked far more assured than Hateboer but came on too late.

Luuk de Jong N/A: Not on the field long enough to get a rating. Hardly involved as Netherlands went direct.
