Netherlands boosted their chances of reaching Euro 2020 with a massive 4-2 victory in Germany. Michael Bell rates the Oranje stars for their performance.

Jasper Cillessen 7/10: Could possibly have done better with the opener but made a massive save to then deny Reus. Did nothing wrong in the second half and was a calming presence.

Denzel Dumfries 4.5/10: Caught out a few times in the first-half and Netherlands looked a much stronger unit after he was substituted in the second half

Daley Blind 6.5/10: Germany exploited Blind’s lack of pace at times and he was caught a few times in the first-half. Performed much better after the break and was great in possession.

Matthijs de Ligt 7/10: After his poor performance for Juventus, eyes were on De Ligt but he barely put a foot wrong during the 90 minutes. Was unfortunate to give away a penalty in the second half.

Virgil van Dijk 7.5/10: Bossed the defence the whole game and barely gave the German attack a sniff. Played a key role in Netherlands second goal as well.

Marten de Roon 5/10: Offered very little in the first-half and was substituted early in the second. Needs to fear losing his place to Davy Propper.

Frenkie de Jong 7.5/10: Struggled to find openings in the first-half but he netted an excellent equaliser and was a joy to watch after the break. Looked very confident on the ball and kept Netherlands ticking.

Georginio Wijnaldum 8/10: Excellent second half performance from the midfielder! Set up Malen with a lovely pass and busted a gut to net the fourth. Rating isn’t higher because he was almost invisible in the first-half. Made up for it in the second though.

Quincy Promes 6/10: Was outwitted for the German opener and didn’t make a key impact going forward. Lacked a final ball and snatched at some chances. Not his finest performance.

Ryan Babel 7/10: Every time you wonder why Koeman persists with Babel he puts in a performance like this. Very reliable on the ball and played a crucial role in the equaliser. Also put the pressure on that caused the own-goal. Substituted late on after a tiring performance.

Memphis Depay 8.5/10: As usual, Memphis fought hard in an Oranje shirt and he played a crucial role in three out of four of the goals. Put in the ball for the own goal, played a role in Malen’s goal and then set up Wijnaldum to seal the win. Such a crucial player for Koeman’s Netherlands!

Substitutes:

Davy Propper 6.5/10: Came on for De Roon and helped Netherlands maintain control of the midfield and looked very calm on the ball. Barely put a foot wrong and is now pushing to start.

Donyell Malen 7/10: What a debut for the PSV forward! Scoring in a win over bitter rivals Germany. Took his goal well and was a constant threat. A very encouraging performance for the youngster.

Nathan Ake: Came on too late to make a big impact.
