Netherlands missed the chance to qualify for the World Cup after they were held to a 2-2 draw by Montenegro on Saturday. Michael Bell provides his player ratings for the Oranje players.

Justin Bijlow 5/10: This was the first shaky game in Oranje for Bijlow, who was caught by surprise for the first Montenegro goal. He could do nothing about the equaliser but this was not Bijlow’s finest game in Oranje.
Denzel Dumfries 6/10: Dumfries put in a decent display and he did well to provide the assist for Memphis to make it 2-0 in the second half. Still the undisputed right-back for Oranje.
Daley Blind 4/10: Started the game well, but then drifted off and proved to be a defensive liability. He was caught out on more than one occasion and crucially for the Montenegro equaliser.
Stefan de Vrij 6.5/10: De Vrij did most things well during the match and was rarely caught out by the Montengran attack. He was substituted before the end, but cannot take the blame for either goal.
Virgil van Dijk 6/10: Got a lot of the ball and spread the play, while looking commanding at the back for most of the game. However, Van Dijk needed to provide more calm towards the end, and he looked a little lazy in his positioning.
Frenkie de Jong 6.5/10: Helped Oranje defensively and was the one looking to get possession forward. Probably not a coincidence that it all went wrong after he was substituted.
Georginio Wijnaldum 4.5/10: Wijnaldum did not have an impact on the game and you would have been wondering for most of it whether he was actually on the pitch. Not his evening. He was then substituted.
Davy Klaassen 5/10: Got the penalty that got Netherlands on the scoreboard but that was really his only contribution to the game as he struggled to get involved throughout.
Donyell Malen 5/10: Got the chance on the right wing and grew into the game, but was then brought off at half-time for Bergwijn.
Arnaut Danjuma 5/10: Got his big chance to start but he did not do enough to impress. He put a decent chance wide in the first half and struggled to contribute after the break.
Memphis Depay 7.5/10: Another Netherlands game, another two goals for Memphis, who was once again the most threatening and reliable attacker in Oranje.
Substitutes
Steven Bergwijn 5.5/10: Made a decent impression after coming on in the second half and had a good partnership with Dumfries on the right. Looked lively and may get the nod to start against Norway.
Teun Koopmeiners 5/10: Came on for Wijnaldum and didn’t make a strong impression while on the pitch. Lost the ball a few times and looked out of position for the first Montenegro goal.
Ryan Gravenberch N/A: Not on the pitch long enough for a review
Noa Lang N/A: Not on the pitch long enough for a review
Matthijs de Ligt N/A: Not on the pitch long enough for a review
Thought the way Van Dijk and De Vrij reacted and played with Koopmeiners was appalling behaviour.
And shows Van Gaal doesn’t have a strong sense of direction on what he is doing.
