Netherlands will face Italy in the U17 European Championship on Sunday after defeating England 6-5 on penalties. The tie finished 0-0 during normal time.

Kees van Wonderen made two changes to the side that beat Republic of Ireland on penalties with Brian Brobbey and Cristopher Mamengi coming into the starting eleven.

Netherlands started brightly and nearly took the lead in the opening minutes but Liam van Gelderen’s strike from close range hammered into Luca Ashby-Hammond’s face before rebounding to safety. The English goalkeeper then saved well from Mohammed Ihattaren.

As the first half wore on England grew in confidence with Faustinho Anjorin hitting the inside of the post while Bobby Duncan fired a free-kick wide.

In the second half the game was even but Ihattaren fired a good chance wide after tricking his way into the box. Ryan Gravenberch came off the bench and almost had an instant impact but he could only steer Ihattaren’s cross wide.

The match headed for penalties and Joey Koorevaar was once again the hero for Netherlands saving from Folarin Balogun to send Oranje into the final. On Sunday, Netherlands will meet Italy in the final.
