Netherlands went into the semi-final without two key players. Ki-Jana Hoever was suspended while Kenneth Taylor was sick. Melayro Bogarde and Steven van der Sloot came into the starting line-up.
Mexico were well organised and Netherlands struggled to create chances. The best of the first-half fell to Jayden Braaf but he fired wide.
In the second half, Netherlands took control but the chances they created did not lead to a goal. Youri Regeer hit the bar, while Sontje Hansen, Ian Maatsen and Braaf all passed up good opportunities.
Finally with fifteen minutes to play, Netherlands took the lead when Bogarde breezed past his man on the wing before crossing for Regeer to net.
However, the lead was short-lived as Efraín Álvarez curled in a questionable free-kick to send the game to penalties.
Mexico missed their first spot kick, but advanced because Taabouni, Braaf and Regeer all missed.
Netherlands will now head into Sunday’s third place play-off with their chances of winning the trophy now over.
