Netherlands U19’s have safely qualified for the elite qualifying round of the European Championships but they finished second in their first round group after a 2-1 defeat to Republic of Ireland.

Wins over Faroe Islands and Bosnia and Herzegovina saw Netherlands already book their place in the next qualifying round, but top spot in their group was up for grabs on Tuesday.

NEC Nijmegen striker Ole Romeny fired Netherlands in front on 15 minutes but the hosts fought back and were level on the half-hour mark through Adam Idah.

In the second half, Netherlands went close through Ryan Gravenberch but it was the Republic of Ireland who sealed the victory. William Ferry fired in the winner with 20 minutes left to seal their place at the top of the group.

Netherlands will now not be in the top pot for the elite round draw later this year.
