Two goals in first half injury time saw Netherlands U19’s come from behind to beat Romania 2-1 and start the Euro 2017 qualifiers in perfect fashion.

u17 chongA new generation of Netherlands U19 talents lined up in the Sportpark De Boshoek on Thursday under the stewardship of Maarten Stekelenburg looking to start their journey to the European championships in Georgia next year. However, opponents Romania turned up looking to spoil their hopes and they took a shock lead after only 14 minutes through Adrian Petre.

After the setback Netherlands took control and poured forward looking for an equaliser. De Wit, Dilrosun, and Bijleveld took aim with shots, while Koopmeiners went close with a free kick and Jelle Duin with a header.

Finally on 45 minutes Bijleveld fired Netherlands level after good work from Sheral Floranus and less than a minute later Dilrosun fired a fierce strike into the top corner to put the Oranje in front going into the break.

The second half saw Romania create chances but Netherlands held on to start with a precious victory. Next up is San Marino on Saturday. A win will all but see Netherlands into the elite round.

Netherlands U19 line up: Bijlow, Floranus, De Ligt, Van Drongelen, Carolina, De Wit, Bijleveld, Koopmeiners, Dilrosun, Duin (82. Sierhuis), Chong (82. Van Bergen)
