Erwin van de Looi is disappointed that Sven Botman decided to pull out of the Netherlands U21 squad.

The defender was part of the Jong Oranje squad for the upcoming friendlies with Belgium and Romania but Botman decided to drop out to concentrate on Newcastle United.

Speaking to ESPN, Netherlands U21 boss Erwin van de Looi was asked about Botman pulling out and he said, “I am disappointed. You are working together for something and that includes friendly matches.

“If you are part of the group, you should just be there and you should not cancel too easily. On the other hand: you have to want to come, otherwise not. We will just continue with the guys we have.”

Van de Looi admitted he was shocked by Botman’s decision, “This is the first time I’ve experienced something like this. Still, I respect his decision, because you have to want to play for the national team.”
