Netherlands U21’s put themselves back in contention to win the Toulon Tournament after a comfortable 5-1 win over Qatar U23’s.

ned u21Defeat to the USA on Friday had dented Netherlands chances of finishing top of the group, but a simple win over Qatar has put them back into contention heading into their final group game against hosts France.

Jong Oranje dominated from the start, but didn’t take the lead until the 23rd minute with Hans Hateboer stooping to head in Clint Leemans free kick. Ajax midfielder Django Warmerdam nearly made it 2-0 before the break but he couldn’t direct his volley on target with the goalkeeper out of his goal.

After the break the floodgates opened for Netherlands as they netted three goals in the space of three minutes. Firstly PSV winger Elvio van Overbeek headed in a corner, before his club teammate Mohamed Rayi hammered a shot into the net from the edge of the box. On 51 minutes Vincent Janssen converted Netherlands 4th from close range after Thom Haye’s shot was parried.

Janssen added a fifth with a curling shot, but disappointingly Netherlands couldn’t keep a clean sheet as two minutes before the end Alyahri was left alone at the back post to net a consolation.

Netherlands jump up to second in the group, and a win over France on June 4th may be enough to see them reach the final.
