Netherlands women began 2019 with a 2-1 victory over South Africa in a friendly on Saturday.

Sarina Wiegman’s side headed to South Africa for a training camp last week which culminated in the friendly clash in Cape Town on Saturday. Everton’s Inessa Kaagman was handed her debut while Sherida Spitse made her 156th international appearance. A joint record with Annemieke Kiesel-Griffioen.

The new joint-record holder was celebrating for a different reason in the second minute when she gave Netherlands the lead with a shot that found the net via the underside of the bar.

After 19 minutes it was already 2-0 with Vivanne Miedema capitalising on some poor defending from the home team.

Before the break, Thembi Kgatlana pulled one back for South Africa but that proved to be the final goal of the game as Netherlands saw out the victory in the second half.

A good victory for Netherlands who are preparing for the World Cup this summer.
