Jill Roord scored a 93rd minute winner as Netherlands defeated New Zealand 1-0 in their opening game of the Women’s World Cup.

Oranje Vrouwen saw Canada win their opener on Sunday night and knew they had to see off New Zealand to match their main group rival.

Lieke Martens got the games first chance in the 10th minute but the Barcelona midfielder’s finish was too weak.

The best chances of the first half fell to New Zealand but the woodwork denied Olivia Chance, while Rosie White also hit the post.

In the second half, Netherlands goalkeeper Sari van Veenendaal kept her side in the game with two excellent saves. At the other end, Vivienne Miedema was played in on goal but the striker fired wide.

For the last 20 minutes, Netherlands applied the pressure and eventually in the 93rd minute a winner was scored. Substitute Jill Roord was the hero with a calm finish.

Netherlands start with a win and will now look to follow it up on Saturday against Cameroon.
