Newcastle United are the latest club to be linked with Groningen star Ritsu Doan ahead of the January transfer window.

The Chronicle is reporting that sources from the Netherlands have told them at Newcastle United have been checking out the Japanese international for months ahead of a potential move.

The Magpies aren’t the first English side to be linked with a move for Doan with Manchester City also reportedly to be very keen on the attacking midfielder, who can also play out wide.

The report states that Doan is valued at £1.7 million, which seems very unlikely given that CSKA Moscow failed with a summer offer of around €8 million.

Speaking to VI, Groningen director Hans Nijland did admit that keeping Doan was going to be tricky, “We notice a growing interest in him from other clubs, which is logical, of course, and that there is a moment when we can not keep him, everybody understands. I can not give guarantees that he does not leave in the winter.”

The 20-year-old joined Groningen permanently in the summer after a loan spell at the Euroborg. He has made 47 appearances for the club, scoring 14 goals and adding six assists.
