de jong injDe Jong was granted permission to leave Ajax’s training camp in Austria after a fee was agreed with Newcastle United, and as a medical has already been completed, confirmation of the deal is imminent.

The 25-year-old midfielder made his Ajax debut in 2005, and has since went on to make 244 appearances for the club, scoring 78 goal, while lifting the Eredivisie trophy four times.

After missing most of last season due to injury, De Jong missed out on a place in Netherlands World Cup squad, but has six caps for the national team.

De Jong will now join up with ex-Ajax star Vurnon Anita, and Dutch goalkeeper Tim Krul in Newcastle, while his brother Luuk also played at St James Park last season on loan.

Ajax fans will undoubtedly be sad to see their captain depart, but after seven great years in the first team, they should wish him well at his new club.
