Newcastle United feared Siem de jong could lose his eye after a freak incident during a training session.

de jong nufThe former Ajax midfielder was rushed to hospital with blood pouring from his eye after he was poked by accident by a teammate during training.

Coach Steve McClaren confirmed during his weekly press conference that there was a major concern surrounding the Dutchman.

He said, “There was a massive danger for a good two or three hours,

“He got poked in the eye and went down screaming. There was blood pouring from it.

“Siem wears contact lenses and one of them had come out and gone in his eye.

“When I came back from Pav’s memorial, I saw him in a darkened room and he had the biggest black eye ever, headaches and everything.”

Fortunately for De Jong his situation has improved and he is only expected to be out for two to three weeks.
